Perception is a direct consequence of our physical
interaction with the world. And yet there is increasingly little hands-on
making and creating in contemporary life – including in main-stream education.
From 25th to 27th October, as part of Lottolab's
first ever i,maker programme, we subverted this trend by inviting visitors to
Lottolab to explore the physical basis of perception. More than 60 visitors of
all ages, but particularly children and families, took part in the drop-in
workshops where they were given the opportunity to create their own colour
illusions and print them on to a scarf or tote bag using inks and stamps;
others took part during the Lates. Two young people on a business enterprise scheme became
mentors to the visitors and in the process were given the chance to see
themselves differently – a fundamental aim of the i,maker programme. Lottolab
experts including, in this case, textile designer Michelle Lowe-Holder, supported
the young mentors in turn.
